Curator Juan Gaitan
Tell us your story of your life in 140ch.
Born in Toronto, raised in Bogota. Went to school and university. Wanted to be a writer. Studied art. Then art history. Didn’t finish PhD. Became a curator. Now married.
How would you describe your generation of curators?
I'm reminded of Harold Rosenberg's amazing sentence, "a herd of independent minds." The lighter version of which is found in Monty Python's The Life of Brian, when the reluctant false prophet Brian yells to the congregation "You are all individuals!" and the congregation replies in unison "We Are All Individuals!"
How would you define the era that we live in now?
The first thing that comes to mind is perplexity and political confusion, mixed with an occasionally aggressive enthusiasm that is difficult to explain except by calling it "American," which of course is another word for "naive optimism."
